N Scale Stock Cars, Southern Pacific & Affiliated

These are models of the Southern Pacific stock cars. They are designed for Micro-Trains trucks and 1015 short shank coupler.

K&S 8246 1/2″ brass stock or similar can be used for the floor and to add weight the car. Additional weights are also recommended in addition to the brass. A better option can be purchased from TxChemist Tungsten on Ebay. Look for “1 Tungsten pinewood weight Stick on Plate” for One TxW Alloy plate 0.7 oz. (0.095″x0.5″x1.72″).  Another way to add weight is with metal cows.  Pendraken Miniatures model 10-NML1 10mm cows are perfect for this.  Pendraken also makes 10mm sheep.

Coupler installation is with a normal Micro-Trains 1015. A mounting hole is provided. (If you have earlier chassis with the more complex coupler attachment procedure contact me and I will send you new chassis ) You will also need to add the brake wheel and shaft. For this I recommend Gold Medal Models 160-5 etched metal brake wheels and 0.008″ phosphor bronze wire.

Note: The quality of the brake wheel end is not as crisp as the rest of the model. Unfortunately this is a characteristic of the printing process and compromises made to get sides to print crisply. The bottom of the 3D print always has some excess material. In this case the model was printed at an angle so that the bottoms of the slates on the side of the car would not tend to fill in. This results in the brake wheel end not printing as cleanly as the hatch end of the car.

These cars were built from the 1910s through the 1920s and were in use through the 60s when SP abandoned the carrying of livestock.

“ As William Rutledge stated, the car sides are amazing, and I don't see all that much wrong with the seldom seen ends. The complete series of Standard stock cars is available, from S-40-4 to S-40-10. Wonderful decals for them are available from TT-West right down to the wheel pack data. It's taken awhile for my eyes to recover from decaling four of them in succession, so recommend not doing too much of that without a taking breaks. The majority of the S-40-4 and S-40-5 cars were constructed for the Texas and Louisiana Lines that became the T&NO, but none of the subsequent ones in the series were.”
